Generator / Inverter Size Calculator

Add the appliances you need during load-shedding and find the running and starting watts your generator or inverter must supply.

How it is calculated

Running watts = sum of all appliances you run at once. Starting watts = running watts + the single largest motor surge (fridges, borehole and pool pumps, aircon compressors start at 2–3× their running watts). We add a 20% safety margin. The same size applies to an inverter. Fuel use (litres of petrol or diesel) is estimated at typical half-load consumption; the battery size is the average load over your outage length. Avoid running geysers and stoves on a backup system – they use the most power.

Results are estimates for planning, not bills or professional advice. For generator or inverter hookups use a changeover switch installed by a registered electrician with a certificate of compliance (CoC).
