Battery Backup Runtime Calculator

How long a battery, inverter or UPS will run your devices during load-shedding or a power outage.

Typical loads: fridge 150 W average, fibre router 15 W, CPAP 40–60 W, phone 10 W, LED lights 10 W each, laptop 60 W, TV 100 W, gate motor 250 W. Load-shedding cuts usually last 2 to 4 hours – higher stages mean longer or more frequent cuts. The stage figures here are rough worst-day planning numbers, not your schedule.

How it is calculated

Usable energy (Wh) = capacity × usable depth of discharge × inverter efficiency. Runtime = usable energy ÷ (load − solar input). Load-shedding cuts typically last 2 to 4 hours, and higher stages mean longer or more frequent cuts, so size your battery for the longest block and make sure it can recharge between cuts. Real runtime drops with high-surge devices.

Results are estimates for planning, not bills or professional advice. For generator or inverter hookups use a changeover switch installed by a registered electrician with a certificate of compliance (CoC).
